Bullets cautious on Sulom offer

Nyasa Big Bullets say they are exercising caution on Super League of Malawi’s (Sulom) announcement that part of its K100 million grant from Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will go to CAF Champions League representatives.

Bullets are eligible to represent the country in the elite continental showpiece by virtue of being TNM Super League champions.

The People’s Team chief administration officer Albert Chigoga said they will take a “wait-and-see” approach on the pledge as Sulom have not fulfilled the pledge they  made a couple of years back.

He said: “It is great news if they walk the talk.

“Moreover, if they divulge the exact amount to be given to the participants, it would be nice as it would help in terms of planning.

“For now, let us wait until we cross the bridge.”

Soon after FAM announced the grant, Sulom president Tiya Somba-Banda said: “Apart from providing grants to the teams to increase on the current K1 million subvention, we will [also] support the champions in CAF participation  as it is done in other countries.”

He attributed the league’s failure to fulfil its promise in the past to the Covid-19 pandemic, which he said affected their finances.

Somba-Banda also said the package will cement their drive to professionalise the league.

“Our key areas will be employing a full-time secretariat led by a chief operating officer, a professional accountant and marketing officer,” he said.
