Bullets in first league victory after 2 months

It sounds like a silly joke, but that is the reality on the ground. TNM Super League champions FCB Nyasa Bullets had not tasted victory in the TNM Super League for the past two months until on Wednesday when they beat rookies Fomo FC 3-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The last time the Blantyre-based giants collected full points was on May 17 when they beat Mzuzu City Hammers 2-0 at the same venue.

Yesterday, The People’s Team’s match was poorly patronised. The northern stands that are synonymous with a sea of red and white were visibly deserted.

But Bullets still went on to put up a gallant fight to ensure they bag full points thanks to Maxwell Gastin Phodo and Babatunde Adepoju’s first-half goals. Stanley Billiat added the third goal in the second half.

Phodo netted his first league goal in the 14th minute with a long-range shot, beating Fomo goalkeeper Richard Mtekateka.

Nigerian Babatunde made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, heading in Chikumbutso Salima’s corner-kick, his second in the 2024 TNM Super League season.

Then substitute Billiat, who substituted Chrispin Mapemba at half-time, connected Gomezgani Chirwa’s wayward shot in the 73rd minute to give Bullets the much needed victory.

Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa also made four more changes as Antony Mfune and Kenneth Pasuwa came in for Gasten and Babatunde before Sean McBrams and Yankho Singo were introduced for Salima and Lloyd Aaron.

But Bullets had to finish the match with 10 men following an injury to substitute Mfune.

Following the victory, the defending champions, who swept all silverware last season, are now on fifth position with 20 points from 13 matches replacing Creck Sporting Club who lost to Civil Service United on Wednesday. Fomo, who are in their maiden topflight league, are 12th with 14 points.
