Bullets players end training boycott

TNM Super League defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets yesterday called for a crisis meeting to address a number of issues that have hit the club, including players’ training boycott on Tuesday and the team’s current poor performance on the pitch.

The rift comes at a time the People’s Team is enduring its worst start to the season, having collected 15 points out of a possible 30.

Although the players claim they are owed dues, the club denied this and said they only owe the players June dues which are paid on 29th of every month.

Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga in an interview yesterday said they also sorted out other issues raised by the players.

He said: “There is a lot that has been said about the training boycott incident. First, let me make it clear that as Bullets, we don’t owe the players any dues. We don’t owe them salaries [and] we don’t owe them training allowance. We don’t owe them game bonuses.

“Today, we had a meeting and we asked them what are the issues that would lead to them to boycott training. What came out is that the players have some concerns which they felt the management should handle.”

Chigoga said the players were not happy with how management handles their concerns.

He  said:  “One of the issues is that when they have concerns, management should handle them timely and give feedback. The players just want the management to be close to them.

“The other issue is about where they lodged when they went to Lilongwe for the match against Creck Sporting Club. They were accommodated at a lodge in Chilambula instead of where they usually stay and this did not go down well with them.”

Bullets players are also not happy with the club’s delays to revise external travel allowances when playing in the CAF Champions League.

Said Chigoga: “As you can see, most of these are small issues and were just used to bring out some things that they could have done without boycotting training.

“For example, the CAF Champions League will be played in August and there is plenty of time to address the issue without necessarily disrupting training.”

He said the players’ concerns will be presented to the club’s board for consideration.

On reports that the club suspects the players’ sabotage has resulted in poor performance, Chigoga said: “The issue is that the team hasn’t started well this season. Whenever the team is not doing well, so many issues come out. If the team was doing well, I don’t think we could have had all these issues.

“If there is a team that pays well, then it’s Bullets and any responsible Bullets player cannot sink so low to sabotage his own club.   But in football you can’t rule out such things. Football is a game of competition. But we don’t want to dwell much on such things.”

One of the players confided in The Nation that one of the key issues is that they made proposals relating to their allowances at the start of the season, “but two months down the line, we have not received any feedback”.

On whether the issues are contributing to their poor performance on the pitch, the player said: “Somehow yes, but we are also just going through a bad patch.”

But football analyst Charles Nyirenda felt there is more to the story than meets the eye.

He said: “I think we are not being told the full story. The club needs to come out clearly on the issues that led to the training boycott.

“We are hearing of the players wanting to meet the club’s owners. Over K20 000 training allowance? This doesn’t make sense.

“With the club not doing well, the question is do these players’ concerns have anything to do with it? If so then the club needs to sort things out immediately otherwise, burying them will not solve the problems.”

Bullets are fifth on the log table with 15 points from 10 matches. They have won just three matches, drawn six and lost once to leaders Silver Strikers.

They are 11 points adrift of the leaders Silver Strikers, who are unbeaten with eight wins and two draws.

Meanwhile, the players have since resumed training.
