Businessperson Ali Saidi Chinamba, popularly known as ‘Ali Kaka’, was sent to Chichiri Prison in Blantyre yesterday waiting to answer a charge of murder contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.

Chinamba, who contested as a parliamentary candidate in Blantyre City South Constituency in the 20 MayTripartite Elections, handed himself over to police on Monday night after he allegedly shot dead a man.

The deceased, identified as Dave Kadzuwa Banda aged 20, was a resident of Chilomoni Township, but hailed from Chamtulo Village, Traditional Authority Namkumba in Mangochi.

Southern Region police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said facts gathered indicate that Chinamba wanted to drive out around 8:30pm on Monday, but when he drove into the road from his house, he found that the way had been blocked by a truck offloading river sand.

Gondwa said the men offloading the sand reasoned with Chinamba to go back to his house and wait as they would notify him when the way is clear.

He said the men, as per their word, went to Chinamba’s residence and informed him that they were done, besides apologising for the inconvenience caused.

However, said Gondwa, Chinamba fired a gun shot on the truck’s window, a situation which prompted the deceased to get out of the truck and kneel before him to apologise further.

Gondwa said Banda was shot on the chin at close range and a post-mortem conducted at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre indicated that he died of gunshot injuries.

Yesterday, some irate residents mobilised themselves and went to Chinamba’s house where they looted and destroyed assorted household property and set ablaze his vehicle.

Police moved in to quell the situation and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
