Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (Cadecom) has asked religious institutions to support rural communities.

Cadecom field officer Mac Angel Mpheluke made the call recently when they distributed drought tolerant seeds to 700 smallholder farmers from Traditional Authority (TA) Nkula in Machinga.

He said the aim was to enable farmers increase their yields and adopt crop diversification.

The seeds included 10 kilogrammes of open pollinated varieties (OPV) maize, 12 kilogrammes of CG7 groundnuts and 2.5 kilogrammes of pigeon peas given to each farmer.

In his remarks, Father Reverend Nankhwala advised the farmers to use them for their intended purpose.

“Households that are food insecure cannot fully serve God,” he said.

The church is working in partnership with Zomba Research and Development Department (Zardd).
