Carlsberg derby hype

Listen to this article

Age-old rivals Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers have set on a flurry of mind games ahead of tomorrow’s Carlsberg Cup semi-final showdown slated for Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Nomads general secretary Mike Butao set the tone by sneering at Bullets that they will have a tall order because this time, they will have no luxury of being awarded a penalty, insinuating that lately Bullets have escaped from the jaws of defeat through penalties.

In two successive league matches, Bullets came from behind to hold Mafco and Blue Eagles.

“When it comes to cup games, they (Bullets) play second fiddle and on Saturday they will be shown the exit from the Carlsberg party. We will win and reach the finals,” declared Butao.

But Bullets flamboyant chairperson Kondi Msungama said when it comes to winning games in the media, the Nomads have no match.

“If you talk about winning games off the pitch, especially in the media, then Wanderers are in the class of their own. One would even be tempted to say that they are a better side than Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

“But the truth is that we have reached a point of feeling sorry for them because we have found them to be an easy prey of late,” said Msungama.

Meanwhile, Bullets have shifted their training base from Kamuzu Stadium to Sedi in Chiradzulu, but their general secretary Harold Fote said there is nothing fishy about the change of training venue.

“It is all about the conditions of the pitch. Sedi is bumpy just like Civo Stadium and we felt it was an ideal ground to train,” he said.

On the other hand, the Nomads are also barring fans from watching their training sessions at BAT ground.

Team manager Kannock Munde defended the move yesterday, saying: “It is not something new, it is done to avoid disturbance from the fans; otherwise, it should not create any suspicion.”
