Top Malawian female boxer Agnes Mtimaukanena-Mwando has disclosed that she will return to the ring next year.

The 22-year-old, who got married to Zimbabwean pugilist Brianne Mwando on December 21 last year, came out of her shell yesterday to reveal that she is expecting a baby.

“I might deliver next month. This is the reason I took a break from the ring. However, I will be fit pretty soon and I intend to have a bout next year,” she said.

Since her break from the ring, female boxers have rarely taken to the ring on the local stage because her local rival, Happiness Nkhoma, has no opponent.

Mtimaukanena became the country’s first female boxer to win an international belt, which was the World Boxing Forum (WBF) title two years ago.

She last fought in March 2013 against Zambian Lereta Muyeza. The fight ended in a draw.

Mtimaukanena’s bid to strengthen her international acclaim late last year hit a snag after her planned two international matches failed to take place. This culminated into her losing sponsorship from Pharmanova Limited.
