CCL fault DAM over ‘Zimbabwe’ player

A misunderstanding has ensued following Darts Association of Malawi’s (DAM) move to bar Austin Chingagwe from last weekend’s Presidential Initiative on Sports national finals at Capital Motel in Lilongwe.

Chingagwe plays for Elvis Freight Country Club Limbe (CCL), but is based in Zimbabwe.

CCL eventually lost the championship to rivals Blantyre Sports Club (BSC). Later, CCL captain Chipiliro Mzanda accused DAM of hypocrisy.

A DAM senior official, who also plays for BSC [name withheld], was reportedly at the centre of the decision that led to the barring of the Malawian passport holder Chingangwe on grounds that he also plays for a Harare side.

Mzanda wondered why DAM never barred BSC’s non-Malawian passport holder Jason Hill from recent competitions, arguing that the association’s constitution never mandates captains to vote on players’ eligibility as was the case at the Lilongwe event.

But DAM general secretary Kelvin Nyirenda said Blantyre and Districts Darts League (BDDL) wrongly registered Chingagwe without clearance from Zimbabwe.

He said Hill was resident in Malawi and issues of passports only apply when it comes to national team appearance.
