Chakwera: I have acquired these assets through hard work

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera has declared his assets as promised two months ago.

Chakwera, who made the declaration during a media conference in Lilongwe yesterday, failed to mention his combined wealth, saying he needs more time for property experts to value the assets.

But he listed his assets as two vehicles, namely; a Mercedes Benz registration BS 1835 and a Hummer registration MC 20.

He said the Mercedes Benz was bought through a bank loan when he was president of the Malawi Assemblies of God while the Hummer was donated by a South African-based business person for his political campaign.

Chakwera also said he has three houses—all in Lilongwe—at plot numbers Area 6/623, Area 49/5/167 and Area 10/576.

He said the Area 10 property cost him K80 million but there is still a balance of K9 million to settle.

Apart from bank accounts (savings, current and mortgage) at National Bank of Malawi and Opportunity Bank, Chakwera said he has Kaphiri 2 Farm in his home area Kasiya in Lilongwe, which he inherited from his parents.

“I have acquired these assets through hard work. The sources of funds for these assets are bank loans, salaries and sale of properties such as my previous houses [Area 3/361/BW/9 and Area 15/159].”
