Malawi-Hilfe Schwindegg has distributed relief items worth K20 million to floods survivors at Chauma Island and Kachere Fishing Beach in Senior Chief Kanyenda in Nkhotakota District.

The items include soap, maize flour, soya pieces, salt, cooking oil and peanut butter.

The support follows a plea Nkhotakota North legislator Henry Chimunthu Banda (Democratic Progressive Party) made to the German charity after floods affected the area.

In an interview on Tuesday after making the donation, Malawi-Hilfe Schwindegg project manager Deus Kumcheza said they did not hesitate to help because they operate in the area.

“We carry out our work in the area. That prompted us to mobilise resources valued at K20 million to support the survivors,” he said.

On his part, Chimunthu Banda, a former Speaker of Parliament, assured the survivors of his commitment to find the required help.

Group village head Simeon Kanyenda said the support came at the right time.

“The people have lost everything. That calls for support from well-wishers to help them get back on their feet,” he said.

According to a preliminary report from Nkhotakota District Council, the flash floods affected at least 14 000 people. Out of this figure, at least 10 000 are in camps, six have died and two are missing.

The council has also appealed to well-wishers for humanitarian aid.
