Chinsinga urges promotion of culture

Minister of Local Government Professor Blessings Chinsinga has urged Malawians to observe and maintain their culture as it amplifies the identity and pride of people.

The minister was speaking on Friday during the elevation of Traditional Authority Chimombo to senior chief during an event that took place at Matundu Primary School in Nsanje District.

Chinsinga said while it is important to observe culture and tradition, it is also important for traditional leaders to provide proper guidance on some cultural norms and beliefs which retain harmful practices. 

“We have some cultural practices which are no longer compatible in this time and age. We need to modify such practices so they can be talking to the present realities. That task is incumbent upon you leaders,” he said.

The minister was referring to cultural practices such as kupita kufa (wife inheritances) and kusasa fumbi (sex with initiates) which are still common in some parts of the Shire Valley. He said it is such kind of practices that make people have bad perceptions about the area.

Chinsinga said: “I am happy with what I have seen here today. There have been some beautiful cultural displays. This is what we need to observe and uphold as a people. We can only market ourselves as a people if we align with our cultural foundations.”

Senior Chief Malemia agreed with the minister saying they have done away with most of the archaic cultural practices which were oppressive to women.

The chief said: “Together with all traditional leaders, we have committed to do away with harmful cultural norms. Some of the acts were contributing to the spread of HIV and Aids and as custodians of culture, we needed to make sure that we put this to a stop.”
