Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Chimwemwe Chiotcha will face his Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) opponent Kasongo Sherif in an eliminator bout at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on August 25 and not August 4 as earlier arranged.

Promoter of the bout Stephen Mawenzie Msiska of Ngumi Boxing Promotions said yesterday that they have changed the dates because the initial date was very close to August 10, the day Chiotcha will have a non-title fight against Tanzanian Francis Cheka in Dar es Salaam.

The August 25 bout is meant to set the path for Chiotcha to fight for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) continental super middleweight title against yet-to-be identified opponent in Blantyre on September 29.

“We realised that the dates were too close for Chiotcha to be well prepared for the fights. As you can see, he could have two fights within a space on six days and that is unacceptable in professional boxing,” Msiska said.

Chiotcha, who is currently camping in Liwonde under his coach Godfrey Jalale ahead of the August 10 fight, said he is happy that the promoter has noted the anomaly.

“This is a nice development as it will give me ample time for practice. But I assure you that I will win all my three imminent fights and I will be a title-holder of an international belt by the end of September,” Chiotcha said.
