Vice-President Khumbo Kachali: There is need for good political, social and economic governance for SADC countries

Vice-President Khumbo Kachali has said there is need for good political, social and economic governance for Southern African Development Community (Sadc) countries to achieve development for their people.

In his opening address to the SADC Lawyers Conference in Lilongwe yesterday, Kachali observed that despite several decades of self-rule, the region still has a lot to do to develop its people.

He said there is need for the region to develop political systems that would ensure governments of the “people, for the people and by the people.”

Said Kachali: “We need to develop a culture of respect for the rights of our people at both inter-personal and regional level. We need to create and afford our people opportunities for self-fulfillment and living meaningful lives. We have yet to secure lasting peace, security and stability to create hope for a better life for our people.”

The Vice-President said lawyers in the region have an important role to ensure that governments have working constitutions and stick to constitutionalism.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Constitution-Making and Constitutionalism in Sadc: Opportunity or Illusion for Justice, Peace and Shared Values?’

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki gave a keynote address during the opening of the conference which is being held ahead of the Sadc Heads of State Summit scheduled for August 12 to 18.
