The Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi has drilled a borehole in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Katunga in Chikwawa in memory of departed first missionaries of the church.

The first missionaries, who died of black water fever in 1863, were buried in the presence of Robert Livingstone and John Kirk at the banks of Shire River.

It is highly expected that the borehole, sunk in Julius village, a few metres from Kamuzu Bridge, will contribute towards government’s efforts of improving sanitation and hygiene among rural people.

Head of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi, Bishop Alinafe Canon Kalemba, has since urged communities to take care of the facility so that it serves its purpose well.

“The Chikwawa Anglican Parish will just be coordinating maintenance. But as beneficiaries, communities should utilise and look after it well,” Kalemba said.

Chikwawa District Commissioner (DC) Alex Mdooko commended the church for the facility, saying it will greatly improve people’s living conditions.
