Church saves 2 000families from hunger

The Salvation for All Ministries has distributed maize and maize flour to 2 000 households affected by hunger in Ntcheu District.

The distribution follows a 2023 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report that at least 4.4 million Malawians will face hunger in the current lean period.

In an interview on Friday after distributing the food items, the ministry’s founder Apostle Cliford Kawinga said government alone cannot reach out to all food-insecure households; hence, the donation.

“It is part of our mission to save those in need because that is what God wants. Apart from taking care of people spiritually, we also need to provide them with what they lack, in this case food,” he said.

Kawinga said the ministry spent over K65 million to organise the whole event up to distribution of the food, which also included bread and drinks for the day.

Senior Chief Kwataine, whose subjects benefitted from the initiative, said the aid was timely because many people in his area have no food.

“Some people may dismiss that there is hunger in the area but let them come and see what is happening. They will discover that people are struggling to feed themselves. Government is trying, but the demand is too big,” he said.

Janet Phombeya, a community member, thanked the apostle for the gesture.

“I was surviving on piecework. The maize flour will go a long way in saving my family from starvation. I appeal to other well-wishers to help us with food,” she said.

Phombeya advised other beneficiaries not to sell the maize.

Apart from the food assistance, the apostle also provided monetary support to traditional and religious leaders as well as the Rastafarian community.
