MDF’s dominance in sports continues as Combat Battalion of Mvera, Dowa won the inaugural K250 000 Centurion Guest House Darts tournament on Saturday in Lilongwe.

This is the third major tournament for Combat to win; others were the Darts Association of Malawi (DAM) tournament and the Abdul Gaffar Memorial.

Combat’s achievement follows those of Kamuzu Barracks and the Marine Unit in football and beach soccer respectively.

The darts tournament, which was played at Centurion Guest House in Falls Estates, drew eight teams. In the finals, Combat beat Capital Glass 9-5 while in the semi-finals they beat Joe’s Motel 8-6.

For being champs, Combat took home a trophy and K60 000 while Capital Glass got K40 000. Third placed Joe’s Motel received K20 000.

Combat’s Symon Kaonga was named player of the tournament which saw him post 180 score twice in a single tournament. He received K10 000. Albert Mkandawire, also from Combat, was named up-and-coming player of the tournament.

“It is a great achievement for us as we have just been in the league for seven months. To win a treble in seven months against best teams in the land is just out of this world,” said Combat Battalion captain Marcel Kasambara.

Centurion Guest House director Amos Tizora, who watched the finals, expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

“This was a highly competitive tournament and the finals were exhilarating. The disciplined and the professionalism was excellent. We are proud to be associated with this sport,” he said and

promised to make the tournament and annual event. He also hinted at increasing the sponsorship.

“We are thankful and appreciative of this sponsorship. Now, teams will be active again. In the past two years, we have been relying on national tournaments only,” said Central Region Darts League (CRDL) general secretary James Sangala.
