The serene skies over Malawi were shattered on Tuesday June 11, plunging the country into a profound state of mourning after State President Lazarus Chakwera announced the death of Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others in a plane crash.

In the wake of this unforeseen tragedy, the creative community is responding with emotional and touching tributes, a testament to the Veep’s impact and enduring legacy.

Mourned: Chilima

Renowned musician Skeffa Chimoto laments the sudden passing of Chilima and others, suggesting a longing for the opportunity to prepare for such a deep loss: “If only illness had signalled your departure, we would have been able to brace ourselves,” goes the song in part.

“AChilima, Bola tikanazonda…bola tikanazonda matenda..

Mtimawu ukanalimba

Lero Malawi akulira, azimbambo akulira, achinyamata akulira, azimayi nawo..”

On his part, Waxy Kay in his one minute tribute offers solace in the belief of a future reunion beyond the earthly realm.

Life ili ndi gap..

Rest in peace soldiers, we will link up

Limitless life it’s where you are”

Accompanying these melodies are spoken words and poems celebrating the Veep’s vision and tireless dedication to the nation as one poem by Robert Chiwamba highlights:

Rest Chilima, I know your life was a life of purpose on earth and only you understood that purpose, you did not let the forces of this world stop you from pursuing your vision, now go and rest, your work on earth is done,” goes his poem titled Pumani Bwana Chilima.

On his part, Lulu, who released his tribute titled Ndalira, said he felt duty-bound to do so to respect the fallen leader.

“It is all about respect. Madamme Mary Chilima supports my music openly and she posts on her Facebook to support me. I had to do this one,” he said.

Lulu added that he did not know much about politics, but knew the late SKC as a hard, smart worker who was also energetic. Many are drawing strength from these outpouring of tributes that honour Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s life, leadership and the promise of a nation forever changed by his legacy.
