Civil society organisations (CSOs) have advised government to respect recommendations made by member States at the United Nations (UN) Universal Periodic Review (UPR) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
Government made its second appearance before the UN forum on Tuesday and submitted the country’s report (second cycle) on the state of human rights in the past four years.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu, who is leading an 11-member Malawi delegation, presented the 35-page report that detailed progress made in human rights areas since the previous review in 2010.
Centre for Human Rights Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Centre for the Development of People (Cedep) observed that while the country has made some notable achievements, it was imperative to respect the recommendations made by UN member States.
Among the series of recommendations are abolishment of death penalty, improvement of conditions in prisons (by reducing pre-trial detentions and guaranteeing fair trial), repealing of legal provisions criminalising consensual sexual activities between people of the same sex and laws that discriminate against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex (LGBT) persons.
While commending the country for submitting its national report, Cedep and CHRR said it was necessary to seriously pay attention to the recommendations to improve its human rights record.

  1. CHRR is led by stupid leaders. Malawi is a sovereign state. You need to understand which takes precedence between national needs and un recommendation. Why guys are still living slaves of 19th century? That is colonial mentality. LGBT have no room in Africa period. What is UN after all? Why is it failing to solve Syria, Iraq and South Sudan issues? It is a hopeless institution or a bunch of confused persons who want to enslave and colonise Africa. Time for colonisation and slavery is over. Malawi NGOs leaders especially CHRR and Cedep you behave like 19th century chiefs whose job was to sell and kill their fellow Africans. You are stooges, traitors and cockroaches.
