Daza predicts MCP breakdown

Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) secretary general Chris Daza has predicted the downfall of the country’s oldest political party, saying many people will quit MCP before the May 20 2014 General Elections.
The social media and public domain has been rife with rumours that MCP deputy campaign director Joseph Njobvuyalema will soon join Daza in the ruling People’s Party (PP) which he joined two weeks ago. Daza’s remarks at a political rally in Lilongwe on Saturday have added to the rumours.
Njobvuyalema told the media last week that there is a crisis in MCP which needs urgent attention, blaming people surrounding MCP president the Reverend Lazarus Chakwera of misleading him.
Said Daza: “Where I am coming from, there is a mass exodus. Just wait, you will see more coming to the party [PP].”
Daza, whom President Joyce Banda drafted into her Cabinet as Minister in the Office of the President and Cabinet responsible for Good Governance, said when national executive committee (NEC) members abandon a party, it is a sign that all is not well in MCP. However, he did not elaborate on the problems that led to his exit.
But MCP deputy publicity secretary Ezekiel Ching’oma said Daza should mind his business in his new party and stop attacking MCP.
Said Ching’oma: “Things are going on well in MCP. I can’t speak for Daza since it’s his opinion, but just to say that when a marriage ends, it is best to concentrate on your new marriage than speak ill about your previous marriage.”
He also dismissed rumours that among those contemplating to join PP is former MCP president John Tembo.
Others who were introduced as new members of PP at the Saturday rally were Goodwell Chimangeni who was United Democratic Front (UDF) deputy publicity secretary.
