Mcheka Chilenje: Members should not bring
controversial issues in the House

First Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje on Monday warned members of Parliament (MPs) against bringing chaos into the House.

Mcheka Chilenje sounded the warning as MP for Kasungu East Madalitso Kazombo was holding the floor contributing to the 2014/15 debate.

Kazombo diverted from his contribution to start advocating for a federal government for the Central Region.

As he was speaking, other MPs loudly heckled him, prompting the legislator to raise his voice even more.

But Mcheka Chilenje halted Kazombo’s tirade and asked that MPs should stop handling national issues emotionally.

“I advise members holding the floor not to bring controversial issues which will bring disorder in the House.

“I would like to see amicable deliberations on the floor. Proceed with the debate, but cool down,” the first deputy Speaker said.

However, Kazombo cooled down slightly and continued to give reasons for the Central Region to become a federal government.

“When we speak like this, it means it pains us. It pains us to see Kapyanga area with a population of 4 000 people, but it has no health centre,” Kazombo said.

Kazombo said former president the late Kamuzu Banda laid foundations in education by constructing schools and colleges across the country, but other leaders since then have failed to replicate that.
