The European Union has injects 1 491 035 Euros towards the Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project, targeting low income areas in Lilongwe City.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in the city during the opening ceremony of a workshop organised by the contracting authority, WaterAid Malawi, which will work with Lilongwe City Council, Lilongwe Water Board (LWB), Training Support for Partners, and Circle for Integrated Development.

WaterAid has contributed 500 000 Euros towards the project, making the amount 1.9 million Euros.

WaterAid Malawi country representative Mercy Masoo said due to rapid urbanisation, the city is facing a lot of challenges in sanitation and hygiene.

“This project is aimed at improving access to sustainable water supply and sanitation for vulnerable peri-urban populations in Lilongwe City by providing piped water and constructing modern latrines in public places,” said Masoo.

She said the project, to run for 30 months, will also work on how to manage waste from collection points, treatment and also recycling.

EU project manager (Infrastructure Section) Mac Aubrey Simon Chirambo urged all stakeholders to stick to contractual agreement for the project to be successful.

He said the amount is part of the 24 million Euros EU has released towards the water and sanitation programme in the country—of which 6 million Euros will go towards urban sanitation while the 17 million Euros has gone to Unicef, targeting water sanitation and hygiene projects in rural areas.
