EU hails MEC for transparency

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to the May 20 Tripartite Elections has recognised Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) transparency during the election period.

In a statement made available to The Nation, EU EOM says it is impressed with the way MEC handled the tallying of votes, noting it was transparent and accurate.

“These efforts were limited by the 7-day time frame provided to MEC to announce the election results, and, therefore, may now be subject to the jurisdiction of the Judiciary for further consideration,” reads in part the statement.

The statement says EU monitored tallying of results both at district and national tally centres.

Reads the statement: “The EU EOM is bound by a code of conduct to ensure its impartiality and its non-interference in the electoral process, therefore, EU EOM will provide a full assessment of the tallying process and the related handling of legitimate complaints only after the process has been completed.”

The mission says it will publish a comprehensive assessment of the electoral process, including its recommendations, after the conclusion of the electoral process.

EU observers have been in the country since April 12.
