Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has extended medical insurance cover requirement to second-tier leagues in its quest to ensure that players’ welfare should improve.

FAM first vice-president Moses Mkandawire made the appeal on Monday in Mzuzu during the official opening of the two days leadership training workshop the association organised for football officials in the Northern Region.

The workshop, which was attended by officials from various clubs, ended on Wednesday.

Mkandawire said it is necessary for teams even in the lower leagues to value the health of their players.

The FAM vice-president says premier league teams that will not adhere to such medical requirement will not be registered next season.

“We have already done it at national level, why should we spare premier league teams? Reforms are supposed to start at lower level.

Players’ medical cover has come hot after the death of former Big Bullets’ left-back Douglas Chirambo on April 5, due to brain tumour.

Kaporo Stars defender Kitwell Cheyo thanked FAM for coming up with such an arrangement, saying players will now be assured of medical cover whenever they fall sick or get injured.
