Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is this Saturday expected to reconstitute its technical and youth standing subcommittees following vacancies created by changes in the association’s executive committee.

FAM statutes provide for the association to have a technical and youth subcommittees responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the game such as coaching, youth development and medicine and, according to Article 42 of its constitution, the standing committee is supposed to be headed by FAM executive committee members.

The statutes reads: “The chairperson and deputy chairperson of the standing committees shall be members of the executive committee with the exception of those for the internal audit committee, who may not belong to the executive committee.”

FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda confirmed that there are vacancies in the subcommittee following the departure of former Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Tiya Somba-Banda and former National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) chairperson Suzgo Ngwira who were chairperson and vice-chairperson of subcommittee, respectively.

Somba-Banda lost to Fleetwood Haiya during the Sulom elections while Ngwira lost to Adelaide Migogo at NWFA polls last Saturday.

Gunda said: “It’s mandatory that the standing subcommittees should be headed by FAM executive committees members. Since the two executive committee members have left, there is need for the two to be replaced and this will be done on Saturday at the FAM ex-co meeting.”

FAM statues further state that “the members of each standing committee shall be appointed by the executive committee on the proposal of the affiliates of FAM or the president of FAM with the exception of the audit and compliance committee which shall be proposed by the executive committee and endorsed by the general assembly”.

Gunda, however, said it was not automatic that Haiya and Migogo will take up Somba Banda and Ngwira’s positions.

But the GS said the departure of Ngwira will not have an effect on the operations of the subcommittee which is responsibel for recommending who should be the Flames caretaker coach.

He said: “When Somba-Banda left, Ngwira took over as chairperson for the technical subcommittee. She actually chaired the last technical subcommittee meeting which submitted its report to the executive committee.”

The subcommittee consists of a chairperson,  deputy chairperson and five committee members, namely Kelvin Mmangisa, Julius Mithi, Yasin Osman, Humphrey Mvula and National Football Coaches Association  chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni. n.
