Chalira: All is set for FAM Women Cup

Women footballers have enough reason to smile as Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has pumped K10.5 million towards the FAM Women’s Cup scheduled to start on September 13 this year.

National Women Football Committee (NWFC) chairperson Severia Chalira said on Monday that the amount is an increase from last year’s sum of K9.3 million.

“I can inform you that FAM has once again come in to sponsor the cup to an increased amount of K10.5 million,” she said.

Chalira said all the logistics have been set.

‘’The competition will start at district level. We will have a champion at district level that will compete at regional level to seek a regional representative who will then fight for national championship. Currently, I have received a report that registration is almost through in many districts,” she said.

Chalira said regional finalists in this year’s competition will be awarded money and football kit.

“For the first time in the history of the competition, the regional finalist will receive uniforms and six teams are expected to receive kits to motivate district teams,” she said.

However, Chalira said the competition will not start with a launching ceremony because of challenges beyond their control.

Last year, Blantyre Zero of the Southern Region beat Matindi Girls from Central Region to be crowned champions of the tournament.
