“But the number of foreigners that has applied, is six times more than the locals,” said Nyirenda.

He also said as at now, they are still planning on government’s directive to hire a local coach although FAM president Walter Nyamilandu told the Weekend Nation that all options are still being considered.

“From the applicants, we will short-list ten names that will be presented to the executive committee for its scrutiny.

“The executive committee is expected to meet on July 25 and that is where a determination on the way forward will be made,” said Nyirenda.

The FAM GS said if all goes well, they are planning to conduct the interviews on July 27/28.

“And hopefully by July 29 we should have a coach in place and that means we will meet the August 1 target,” he said.

The position fell vacant following the sacking of head coach Young Chimodzi and his deputy Jack Chamangwana.

Under-20 coach Ernest Mtawali was engaged on temporary basis to take charge of the July 6 friendly match against Uganda Cranes which Malawi won 1-0.

Sources confided to The Nation that among the applicants are Mtawali and Kinnah Phiri.
