Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango intensified his hunt for South African Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) golden boot award on Tuesday when he scored his ninth goal of the season.

The goal, scored from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, also helped his club Bidvest Wits thump Golden Arrows 3-0 to reclaim the summit of the 16-team log table.

Wits have 44 points from 21 games and have displaced from the summit Isaac ‘Tcheya’ Kaliati’s Cape Town City FC, who have 42 points from 22 matches. But City have a chance to reclaim the top slot should they beat Robert Ng’ambi and Gerald Phiri Jnr’s Platinum Stars tomorrow in Cape Town.

At present, Mhango is third on the scorers’ list and he is just three goals behind the leading scorer Tendai Ndoro of Orlando Pirates and two below second leading scorer Lebogang Manyama of Cape Town City FC.

This is the second time Mhango is coming close to winning the top-scorer’s accolade in the foreign land. He missed it by a whisker in 2014 when he scored nine goals to finish second behind Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker who scored 10.

“I am trying my best to win the top-scorers’ accolade. However, what is very important for me is to help my team win the league title,” he said.

Ng’ambi is the second best scorer among the eight Malawian players in the PSL. He has so far notched five goals and is tied on eighth position with 12 other players. His teammate Gerald Phiri Junior has two goals while Bloemfontein Celtic striker Atusaye Nyondo has a single goal.

On Tuesday, Mhango’s goal and an assist to brace hero Mogakolodi Ngele confined Arrows, who featured two Malawian players Chiukepo Msowoya and Limbikani Mzava, to sixth place on the log table with 30 points from 23 games.

Msowoya, who was playing his third league match of the season, and Mzava were among the three players that received yellow cards during the match.
