Mangochi Town Council officials have given in to the demands of a group of people calling themselves Mangochi Concerned Citizens to suspend revenue collection from businesspersons.

The council has also agreed to call auditors to audit the council’s books and involve the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) following alleged corrupt practices.

Speaking in an interview after a five-hour meeting yesterday, Mangochi Concerned Citizens chairperson George Hamisi said he was happy that the council had accepted what the group had petitioned.

“We have been seeking an audience with the council to present our grievances on the way the council has been spending money on the procurement of materials and other development projects, but we couldn’t get hold of them as they were reportedly busy. But today, we are happy because we have presented what we wanted,” explained Hamisi.

“We are really satisfied with the consensus and, while we are waiting for auditing to take place, we urge all businesspersons to exercise cleanliness on their premises to keep the town clean,” he added.

In a separate interview, Mangochi Town Council chairperson Ibrahim Kacheya said succumbing to the group’s demands was the only way of ensuring sanity prevailed.

He said following the suspension of revenue collection from businesspersons such as bicycle operators, and all the vendors, the council will suspend its temporary junior labourers such as cleaners and guards as one way of keeping services of the council running.
