Genetrix Hockey Club has realised about K500 000 (about $1 666) from a fundraising big-walk they organised in Blantyre on Sunday.

The club is raising funds for its participation in the African Hockey Club Championships in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from December 1-8.

Genetrix men’s team finished last in their inaugural participation in the continental showpiece last year, but this year they would like to take two men’s teams to the events.

According to the club’s coach Geoffrey Biya, they targeted to raise at least K1 million from their big-walk from Country Club Limbe (CCL) to Blantyre Sports Club through Masauko Chipembere Highway.

Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) vice-president Dean Pinto, general secretary Krishna Achuthan and national coach Mustapha Munshi took part in the event.

“This was just one of our fundraising activities aimed at raising at least K10 million [about $34 000] to take our two teams to the international event. We targeted to collect K1 million [about $3 400] from last weekend’s event, but we made K427 000 [about $1 423],” said Biya.

He added that they are negotiating with Black Missionaries to hold a show for the club’s cause.

“We would like to take at least 36 players to the Bulawayo event, so we will need a number of fundraising activities to raise more funds before we leave for the continental championships in November,” he said.

Genetrix men’s team struggled at the 2011 African Club Championships in Zambia as it was their first time to play hockey on an artificial turf. But they managed to finish as the ‘fair play’ team.
