Kasasa Sports Club golf section vice-chairperson Andy Mdoka used the ‘local knowledge’ to his advantage to win the annual Nico General Golf Day played in Dwangwa last weekend.

Mdoka, who played a cool 66 nett, won a trophy and a state-of-the-art microwave.

In his acceptance speech, Mdoka attributed his six under handicap performance to the good company that he had in his playing partners.

“I would like to thank the sponsors for coming here for the second year running. I would also like to thank my playing partners. It was a good round of golf. I am delighted that I have won today. Last year, when Nico were here, I was runner-up,” said Mdoka.

Another astonishing performance was by former junior national team player from Kasungu, Bob Dambo, who also carded in 66 nett.

Playing off 10 handicap, Dambo was counted out to second position by Mdoka because his back nine performance was weak. Rikas Vd Berg finished third with a score of one back at 67 nett.

In the ladies section, the best golf award went to Roza Mbilizi, playing off 6 handicap, who carded 75 nett. Dwangwa-based Barbara Haas and Ruth Mvula scooped second and third positions with nett scores of 78 and 81 respectively.

In subsidiary prizes, Haas also won the nearest to the pin accolade in the ladies category whereas Sara Sigauke hit the ball the longest. Bregger Kaingwe had the longest tee shot on hole 10 while Robert Ngala landed his tee shot closest to hole 11. Wisely Mataka was awarded the most golf accolade.

Speaking earlier, Nico General Insurance Company chief executive officer Eric Chapola thanked all golfers for taking part in the event.

“Fellow golfers, ladies and gentlemen, I do not take your coming here for granted. This tournament is only two years old. I am proud to inform you today that this event was oversubscribed. There were 80 entries, but we could only accommodate 64. This just proves that Nico is indeed big. We thank you for your support,” said Chapola.

He assured the patrons that Nico General Insurance would be back in a bigger way with yet another exciting tournament come 2013, to the delight of golfers.
