Former Flames and Big Bullets defender Gilbert Chirwa is in critical condition at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.

According to Former Football Players Association (FFPA) chairperson Ojukwu Malunga, Chirwa is battling severe chest and left leg pains.

“He was first admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech) Monday last week, but upon request by his sister, he was referred to KCH last Thursday night.

“He had tests taken before departure, but as of Sunday, the results were not yet out,” said Malunga.

The FFPA leader said apart from fellow former players, Bullets’ chairperson Kondi Msungama and former general secretary George Kapachika have rendered their support.

“Other former players such as Young Chimodzi, Austin Nyondo, Chance Gondwe and Lovemore Fazili (Lilongwe) as well as Edgar Mbalinga, who is our coordinator in the North, have been very supportive.

He said Chirwa is admitted in Ethel Mutharika ward.

Chirwa led Bullets to several silverwares both as a coach and player.

He also played for the Flames for nearly a decade and was part of the team that qualified for the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, All Africa Games in 1987 and won the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup in 1988.
