Ministry of Health chief of health services Matias Joshua has commended World Vision Malawi for improving water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) facilities in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chitekwere in Lilongwe.

He said this on Monday at M’chema Primary School where the ministry and World Vision certified the area as open defaecation free (ODF).

The status comes months after the area was among communities hard hit by cholera due to lack of access to clean water and proper use of sanitation facilities.

Joshua asked the communities and development partners to continue supporting sanitation and hygiene initiatives to reduce the prevalence of communicable diseases such as cholera.

He said: “We have Sustainable Development Goals which we want to achieve. One of them is to end communicable diseases.

“To achieving this, we should ensure that every household has sanitation facilities. That is what World Vision has done in this area.”

World Vision Malawi director of operations Charles Chimombo said the organisation spearheads programmes on water and sanitation to help government achieve SDG number 6 by 2030.

“We are celebrating the ODF status for this community as one way of recognising efforts on promoting sanitation and hygiene in our communities. Our key objective is to ensure that we are improving the well-being of people in communities, especially children who are the most vulnerable,” he said.

T/A Chitekwere commended the organisation for working with various partners to improve sanitation in the area.

“I can confirm that this year we have registered zero cholera cases. We thank World Vision for promoting hygiene practices,” he said
