Minister of Transport and Public Works Francis Kasaila has said government will upgrade the Tsangano Turn-Off to Mwanza via Neno Road to a tarmac one.

Kasaila said in the meantime, some sections of the road will be improved to make them passable during the rainy season.

He said this in an interview on Tuesday after touring the 132-kilometre long road to appreciate its challenges after receiving complaints from people of Neno.

“Government is in the process of looking for a donor who can help to upgrade the road to Bitumen Standard Class 1 as we already have the detailed engineering designs. But in the interim, with our colleagues from the Roads Authority [RA], we have spotted bad sections that cause problems during the rainy season and they will be improved using gravel and concrete pads,” said Kasaila.

He said the road is important because, apart from reducing cost of travel from Mwanza to Lilongwe, it will trigger business.

In an interview, RA chief executive officer Trevor Hiwa said a contractor to work on the bad sections has already been identified.

“We already have a K300 million contract with a contractor who goes around doing works such as those on our roads; the money is not specifically for this road, but it is used to carry out such works and he will be coming to improve some sections of the road shortly,” said Hiwa.
