Police in the Northern Region are hunting for three armed men suspected of shooting a 46-year-old Dutch national, Eddie Peters, who was working as a manager at Chitimba Beach Resort in Rumphi.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola said Peters, who is currently battling for his life at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH), was asleep at the time of the attack.

Said Chapola: “The attackers reportedly invaded the beach at 02:00 hours and at the time the victim was asleep in his apartment when he heard a bang on the door and three men entered the room clad in military camouflage and heavily equipped with revolvers and pangas.”

He said the suspects reportedly overpowered security guards and tied them before they forced themselves into the victim’s apartment where they shot him and went away with huge sums of money in local currency, US dollars and euros. They also stole an iPod and one Canon camera.

Chapola said the victim was shot on the right side of the chest and his medical condition is currently stable.

He said police have managed to find two empty cartilages suspected to be of a revolver and a pair of military camouflage trousers.

The stolen money is estimated at K430 000 in local currency, $500 and 5 000 euros.
