People around Hara Health Centre in Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga District have expressed excitement with a K7.2 million guardian shelter constructed at the facility.

Wasambo Area Development Committee chairperson Happy Ndovie in an interview on Wednesday, commended Hara Coal Mine Company for building the facility.

He said it will ease accommodation challenges that guardians faced at the facility.

“Due to lack of accommodation for guardians and expectant women, those who could not travel to Chilumba Rural Hospital chose to deliver in their homes,” said Ndovie.

However, group village head Mphinga has asked Karonga District Council to complete works on a maternity wing started in 2014.

“As a community, we are grateful for this guardian shelter. However, it cannot be of use when the maternity wing is yet to open.

“Expectant mothers are delivering in their homes due to transport challenges to Chilumba Rural Hospital which is about 12 kilometres away.”

Karonga district director of health and social services David Sibale assured the community that his office will equip the maternity wing.

Hara Coal Mine mining manager Beya Msiska said the donation was part of their corporate social responsibility
