Independent member of Parliament (MP) for Thyolo Central Constituency, Gabu Bob Khamisa, has announced his defection to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

His defection comes barely days after all legislators who won seats on independent tickets in Phalombe joined DPP.

Khamisa confirmed the development in a telephone interview on Monday, saying his defection was in line with what he had agreed with the electorate during election campaign.

“I’ve always been a strong supporter of DPP and its policies. I was only barred from representing the party [in parliamentary elections] because I delayed in expressing my interest.

“In fact, I campaigned for the presidency of Arthur Peter Mutharika during the whole campaign period and I’m not ashamed to rejoin my party,” he said.

Khamisa, 22, is son to the late Bob Khamisa who once served as MP for the constituency.

The younger Khamisa won the seat in the May 20 Tripartite Elections after beating his own uncle, Fariz Khamisa, who stood on People’s Party (PP) ticket.

Independent candidates who announced their defection to the ruling party immediately after the elections results were released include Amos Mailosi of Phalombe East; Denis Namachekecha of Phalombe North East; and Mary Connie Livuza Mpanga of Phalombe South.
