The sole Member of Parliament (MP) for Chipani Cha Pfuko (CCP) Davis Katsonga has opted to sit on the government side of the House even though he is an opposition legislator.

Katsonga wrote Speaker Richard Msowoya that he had made the decision mindful of Section 65 of the Constitution which does not allow crossing the floor.

Msowoya said his office would allocate him a seat on the government side following his decision.

Katsonga has since been allocated seat 87 which is close to independent MPs who are traditionally backbenchers.

Katsonga joins United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi who was appointed Minister of Natural Resources and Energy in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, but he remains UDF leader outside the House.

Meanwhile, two independent MPs, Collins Kajawa for Lilongwe Mpenu Nkhoma and Peter Chakwantha for Lilongwe South East have officially written the Speaker that they have rejoined MCP, bringing the party’s numbers in the House to 53.
