John Kayange has made it into the qualifying list for next year’s 90-kilometre Comrades Marathon and the 56-kilometre Two Oceans Marathon in South Africa after finishing 17th during the 50-kilometre City-to-City Marathon on Sunday.

According to Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) general secretary Frank Chitembeya, Kayange is among 20 qualifiers out of 480 runners who ran from Pretoria to Johannesburg.

The 33-year-old soldier has joined police Sub-Inspector Henry Moyo as the country’s second athlete that will participate in the two prestigious races in South Africa next year.

“This is a big boost to the country’s athletics. We are proud of his achievement,” said Chitembeya who retained his position during AAM elections on Saturday.

Organisers of the South African races asked Moyo to identify at least four Malawian athletes to contest in the City-to-City Marathon, but shortage of long distance runners in the country prompted him to ask Kayange to go and try his luck.
