Kamuzu Barracks (KB) yesterday beat fellow TNM Super League title contenders Blue Eagle 2-0 at Nankhaka ground in Lilongwe to close in on their historic league glory.

Veteran midfielder Dave Banda and prolific forward Manase Chiyesa scored in either half to ensure that the Lilongwe-based soldiers maintain a stranglehold at the summit of the 16-team log-table with 55 points,  a point ahead of second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets,  who narrowly beat Dwangwa United 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

With two games left for each of the top-five teams, Silver Strikers also kept their title hopes alive by thrashing relegation battlers Karonga United 5-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe to displace Eagles from third place with 53 points.

Eagles are now fourth on 51 points while Mafco are fifth with 50 points.

KB coach Michael Chemayere expressed delight with their victory saying: “This win has put us on a better position to win the league title for the first time.  We will do our best to win our remaining games.”

At Kamuzu Stadium, Mussa Manyenje scored Bullets’ priceless goal in the 31st minute with a simple tap-in on a rebound after his first attempt with a header hit the post.

Bullets squandered a lot of scoring chances, especially in the second half, and Muhammad Sulumba was the notable culprit.

At Silver Stadium, captain Lucky Malata headed the Bankers in front from a corner-kick and  Karonga’s defender Foster Ngwira scored an own goal to make it 2-0.

Binwell Katinji netted the third goal before Malata claimed his brace from a 35-metre  freekick as the match, on a heavily soaked and muddy pitch, escalated beyond Karonga’s reach. Midfielder Victor Limbani calmly volleyed in the fifth from close range. n
