Kyungu: Malawi needs strong affirmative action for women if the 50/50 campaign

Karonga Chief Kyungu recently said Malawi needs strong affirmative action for women if the 50/50 campaign is to succeed.
Kyungu was addressing stakeholders in Lilongwe during a post May 2014 50/50 campaign review meeting.
The chief also suggested training women politicians, exposing them to colleagues in other countries and empowering them economically as some of the tactics that can help to increase female representation in decision-making positions.
“I believe women parliamentarians and councilors are better-placed to monitor government activities more than men. The attitude of intimidating women must stop if we are to make progress in equal representation in the next 50 years,” he said.
United Nations (UN) resident coordinator for Malawi Mia Seppo advised women to unite for a formidable force.
On her part, Gender Minister Patricia Kaliati said there is need to examine successes and challenges women faced in the last election for lessons.
Speaking at the same event, Gender Coordinating Network chairperson Emma Kaliya urged government and donors to help put in place policies and laws that promote the elevation of women. n
