Mutharika must end strikes

The Law Society of Malawi (LSM) has appealed to President Peter Mutharika to help in speedily resolving the spate of strikes which are paralysing public and justice delivery services in the country.

LSM Secretary Felisah Kilembe and Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale disclosed the development during a media briefing after the LSM executive committee met the President, in camera, on Wednesday for over an hour at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

The two said concern over the on-going strikes and the need to bring to book those who plundered over K20 billion from the public coffers, in the Cashgate Scandal, were two of several priority issues over which Mutharika was engaged.

Kilembe stated that her delegation made its position of concerns clearly to the President and his government.

On the strikes, she said her delegation came away with great hope from the audience.

“We are very hopeful that this issue will be resolved very soon. They (the government) are working very hard to resolve the strikes,” she stated, refusing to disclose the reason for the confidence, for fear of jeopardising government’s on-going discussions with striking workers in the Judiciary and other public service institutions.

On the Cashgate matter, Kilembe said her delegation pressed for the need to bring the culprits to book and for them to be subjected to a property-tracing provision that will see them returning most of what they stole to the government.

“As Law Society, we are satisfied (on the steps being taken). I think they are serious,” she stated, adding that even the property-tracing approach for the Cashgate culprits is taking shape, as such an expert is technically available.

Kaphale said the meeting was crucial because it was the first time the LSM executive was meeting the President, since his entry into office in May this year. He added that the LSM presented seven points, and discussed some legal protocols and issues, to Mutharika, who welcomed the delegation warmly and promised to help in any way possible.
