My Thought

Let Chizuma getto work now

Listen to this article

The High Court of Malawi on Friday put to a stop the madness surrounding the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Martha Chizuma’s interdiction.

Chizuma has been subjected to what could rightly be described as torture by those whose agenda for leaking the audio was perhaps distract Chizuma and eventually see her out of the ACB so that they can continue stealing from Malawians without consequences.

The arrest and court cases, including an interdiction, all these were clearly aimed at stalling her work and that of the ACB. I am glad the High Court has somewhat given back her wings.

It was starting to get disturbingly quiet with no movement on the corruption cases—even on any news from ACB and for any Malawian who loves this country, the deafening silence from ACB is not a good thing, it is enough to keep someone awake at night.

One can only hope that Chizuma and the  ACB will get down to work with renewed zeal because they have the full backing of the court, Malawians and the President—he already announced that those he wanted Chizuma and ACB to work without interference.

What Malawians would like to see now with this ruling is swift movement in the prosecution of corruption cases that have stalled. There are those who attributed Chizuma’s silence to failure.

I would like to believe that when one has court cases hanging over their head, it must be difficult to do anything because they are uncertain of what would become of them. When one has people breathing through their neck and threatening their lives, it is extremely difficult to work. I want to believe these are reasons that Chizuma and the ACB have been quiet.

I would also urge the President to tame the people that surround him, some of whom badly want Chizuma out of the ACB for reasons best known to themselves.

The fight against corruption is a fight that needs all hands on deck. The wins from this fight, are wins for Malawi and Malawians, especially the poorest amongst us who have greatly been affected by this vice.

Lastly, let their enough political will to see to it that the work of the ACB is financially supported. As for ACB, bite and bite hard while leaving no stone unturned.
