Lilongwe Tourism on Saturday beat Sunbird Livingstonia 7-4 to win a beach soccer bonanza organised by the Central Region Beach Soccer in Salima.

The tournament, which had 12 teams, was partly sponsored by Sunbird Livingstonia and the respective teams, according to Central Region Beach Soccer Committee (CRBSC) chairperson Leonard Mazombwe.

“We are not doing well financially at the moment; that is why Sunbird Livingstonia assisted us. But each team contributed K10 000 towards the event. We are indebted to the teams. They have shown that they are really serious with the sport. We appeal to the corporate world to support us,” said Mazombwe.

He said another bonanza has been slated for June in preparation for the Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS).

“We have been promised good sponsorship for the event and we promise teams this will be more rewarding,” he said.

On Saturday, Leeds United finished third after beating Tilipano 3-0 in third-place play-offs.

“Despite little monetary motivation, the teams put up a gallant fight. There is passion for the sport, but we just need more sponsorship,” said the bonanza’s organising committee secretary, Stereo Gondwe.

He thanked Sunbird Livingstonia for the K50 000 (US$123) donation towards the event and also for providing the venue free of charge.

“They have always been there for us. They have always supported the game here in Salima or at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi,” said Gondwe.
