Members of the Blantyre Lions Club on Sunday took time off their busy schedules to donate relief items to the displaced people of Chikwawa District in southern Malawi.

Chikwawa is one of the five districts that were hit hard by the flooding in January.

Speaking during the function at Jombo Camp, the club’s president Lion Hilda Singo said: “What prompted our response was the plea for assistance to the people of this area since most of their livelihoods such as houses, cattle and crops were washed away.

“As lions, we had to do something about it, so we managed to source these items that we are distributing today through our members and partners. We did not just focus on food but also other necessities like napkins for nursing mothers and also oral rehydration salts for their health needs.”

In accepting the donation on behalf of the beneficiaries, Chikwawa district commissioner Alex Mdooko expressed his gratitude to the Lions for the donation worth about K7.2 million (about $16 000).
