South Africa based lawn tennis whizkid Chisomo Lumeta’s outstanding performances in last year’s competitions have helped him to move 450 places up on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior players’ rankings.

The 2012/2013 ITF rankings show that the 15-year-old Malawian is now number 1 162 in the world.

This is Lumeta’s biggest climb on the ITF ladder since he was roped into South Africa’s High Performance Centre (HPC) in 2009.

According to the ITF statistics, Lumeta’s rise on the rankings is as a result of his superb performances last year when he won 14 of 26 matches in 13 tournaments.

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) president Duncan Gumbi said Monday they expect Lumeta’s ranking to soar further after his North African Tour which he starts today.

Lumeta will take part in the Carthago Cup, which runs from today to Sunday and the Open Junior Championships from June 26-30 in Tunisia. He will also participate in the International Junior championships in Egypt from July 2-6.

“We have no doubt that he will continue rising on the ITF rankings and we are proud of him,” said Gumbi.
