NAM in race against time

NAM is facing a race against time to raise K20 million (about $50 000) for the African Netball Associations (ANA) Championship.

The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has a budget of K40 million (about $100 000) for the netball showpiece and government pledged to meet it half-way.

The tournament will be staged in Blantyre from June 24-29.

NAM president Rosy Chinunda on Monday said they are counting on well-wishers to come to their rescue.

“We have approached several companies, but all that we have are assurances that they will consider us,” said Chinunda.

She said they do not have an alternative, but to keep on knocking on the doors of companies and organisations to bail them out.

She also said as of noon yesterday, government had not yet released its pledged amount.

“Actually, I am supposed to meet the Sports Council executive secretary George Jana later today to follow up on the issue.

“But I am hopeful that we should finalise today so that we can hand over the money to the organising committee,” she said.

NAM general secretary Carol Bapu has said they have identified College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex and Saint Andrew’s International High School as alternative venues to Blantyre Youth Centre in the event of rains.

“The rules say that games are not supposed to be played on a wet court,” said Bapu.

She also said they have an assurance that by today, construction of the stands at Blantyre Youth Centre would have been completed.
