The second edition of Draughts National Championships ended in a resounding victory for 18-year-old Enock Makoka at the Sports Council in Blantyre at the weekend.

He earned 19 triumphs, including his encounter against fourth-placed Jalasi Matiyasi (31 points), the Southern Region champion who was regarded as the favourite in the contest.

He drew against runner-up Madalitso Thom Baba (38 points), third-placed Moses Winesi (36 points) and Chikondi Matope.

However, the event could not clearly tell if the boy really deserved the crown considering that his prowess could not be weighed against that of his predecessor Ganizani Majawa, who, according to Association of Draughts in Malawi (Adma) general secretary Suzgo Nkhoma, failed to turn up for title defence due to unspecified reasons.

According to Adma president Misheck Munthali, the top-five national players are expected to represent Malawi at the African Draughts Championships in Zambia in November.
