Malawi filmmaker hints at two films in 2013
He is arguably one of the best film talents Malawi has. Shemu Joyah recently launched his new movie, The Last Fishing Boat, which has been welcomed and hailed by many Malawians.
And now, the man whose creations were screened at the Kenyan Film Festival in October, has promised more come 2013, with two or three films on standby.
“Three scripts are currently ready for shooting. I am just waiting to polish them up and get funds for the projects.
“One is about a historical figure in Malawi, John Chilembwe, with the others fictitious and, therefore, I cannot talk more about them lest people steal my ideas,” said Joyah in an interview.
This means the popular Chilembwe story, which was only recorded for radio, will now be available on film.
Joyah said the availability of The Last Fishing Boat on the market depends on the completion of post -production works.
“I am currently in talks with a Malawian firm which has the capabilities of using software that protects the DVD from duplication. If we agree with them, certainly, the movie will be on the market January month end. The other option is having it done in South Africa which unfortunately will be time consuming and costly. This will result in The Last Fishing Boat being on the market in February,” he said.
