The Ministry of Youth and Sports has fulfilled its pledge to reward stand-out performers of the 2015 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Africa Cross-Country Championship, which Malawi runners dominated three weeks ago.

Gold medallists Kephas Kasten (senior men), Abina Tchinga (junior women) and Mercy Malembo (junior women) received K50 000 each from the ministry’s Principal Secretary Justin Saidi, Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) president Godfrey Phiri said on Thursday.

“We thank the minister for honouring her pledge. The money came to AAM through the PS Mr. [Justin] Saidi. We, in AAM thank our minister of sports for the support. All athletes have received their money through their banks. AAM also gave K10 000 to each gold winner and K7 000 to silver and K5 000 to bronze medallists,” Phiri said.

The minister confirmed the development yesterday.

Silver medallist Harry Sichali pocketed K30 000 while bronze medallists Malita Phiri and Grevazio Mpani received K10 000 each.

“I thank the minister for motivating us and I would like to urge my fellow athletes to work hard,” said Sichali.

Malawi runners dominated the event at  Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre that also attracted athletes from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

  1. What the fuck is wrong with the Government of Malawi? You mean, the best you could have paid these champions is a meager K50,000.00? What is that for, agule zitumbuwa or what? You mean the whole ministry had to send the whole PS to deliver that? I am sure the PS received much more in allowances etc to pay that money. Yet, 500 million has been taken from the Ministry of Sports. This is a shame, and disgusting. Look at the poor lad, running barefooted and, from the look of things, hungry as well. She is poor, and her efforts can be awarded much better than insulting her with chenje. May the devil fuck you bwana PS.
