Malawi President Joyce Banda has disclosed that her government is going to build concrete silos so that the country has enough maize stocks during lean periods.

Speaking during a mass rally at Masintha recently Banda said metallic silos built in some parts of the country are leaky making storage of maize unsustainable.

She said this is the reason her government has decided to build concrete silos similar to those built by the first president of the country Kamuzu Banda at Kanengo.

“We will build concrete silos because water cannot easily penetrate. Vice president Khumbo Kachali visited some silos made of steel but they were full of water. Infact we have already identified financiers of this project and the designs are also ready,” said Banda.

She said she has received encouraging reports of the tobacco outlook in the field and government is discussing with buyers on the prices.

On her one cow a family programme Banda said her party will continue with the programme because it can take Malawians out of poverty.

  1. This is strange! Maize at Kanengo silos was reported rotten hence the reason for depleted stocks. The said silos are made of concrete but JB is telling the nation that it is silos not made of concrete but steel that leak hence capable of causing damage to the maize and other stocks. The big question is can the president explain where the rotten maize her government claimed came from? In short from which silos? I also find this move strange because it’s less costly for government to fix the leaking silos than abandoning them and build new ones. JB should have appreciated the good reasons why her predecessor built the silos otherwise her move is aimed at erasing this good historical fact. Finally, JBs policy of dishing handouts is not in tandem with achieving food security in the country. Malawi can’t have food in reserves as long as JB keeps on drawing down maize stocks from silos for campaign but excusing this ill gesture as generosity to those in dire need due to hunger which is woman and not man made. Only mature and visionary leaders like Kamuzu and Bingu as far as history can inform us are capable of ensuring that come what may the silos are well stocked and not abused for political benefits because doing so is evil.

      1. Right on Chalo!

This woman is a fool! That’s why everyone is laughing at us Malawians. How can a nation of 18 Million be lead by such a moron? Use the money to built hostels at our universities or get MUST running you cow. But I guess you want to enrich your sons and family members with this unnecessary work.
